Sophie’s World Ch.2 Quotes

P.12 “But there is something else … which everyone needs, and that is to figure out who we are and why we are here.” Sophie came upon a philosophy book and she is getting interested on the subject. She asks herself if there is anything we’ll need after all basic needs have been satisfied. She wonders what we are here for and why it is we are here for that. My opinion is that it doesn’t matter how we got here and why we are here for. I believe its more important to know where we’re headed.

P.14 “P.S. As far as the white rabbit is concerned, it might be better to compare it to the whole universe. We who live here are microscopic insects existing deep down in the rabbit’s fur. But, philosophers are always trying to climb up in the fine hairs of the fur in order to stare right into the magician’s eyes.” In this part of the story, Sophie is wondering what is the best way to live. Planning everything and being prepared or living day by day expecting things to fall in place? Once again I know it is a very mysterious world because there are many things about this planet we urge to know. But, if it were important to have knowledge of how the world began and who the first people were we’d be born with this knowledge or we’d have it all passed down. Because we don’t have the answers to things, all we have are myths.

P.15’THE ONLY THING WE REQUIRE TO BE GOOD PHILOSOPHERS IS THE FACULTY OF WONDER. Baby’s have this faculty. That is not surprising. After a few short months in the womb they slip out into a brand new reality. But as they grown up the faculty of wonder seems to diminish. Why is this? Do you know?” Sometimes people grow tired of wondering about things and not getting the answers they want or when they want them. That’s why as babies we wonder because the world is knew to us but, wont it always be new. New things are discovered everyday and there are still many things yet to be revealed. Sometimes a person’s faculty of wonder has not vanished its just on pause.
